Lim Guan Eng is better buck up before Penangites dump you.

MALACCA: A Unesco committee which will meet in Spain next month is likely to issue a Yellow Flag or warning over George Town and Malacca City’s joint status as World Heritage Sites.

The Unesco World Heritage Committee is likely to raise the alert although there is no danger at present of a possible loss of the status for the two cities.

The meeting will also decide the fate of the controversial hotel projects located within George Town’s heritage zone.

Deputy Information, Communi-cations and Culture Minister Senator Heng Seai Kie said two representatives would be attending the meeting in Seville on June 20 to obtain the committee’s report and recommendations on the matter.

“The issue over George Town will be among the items raised. At this stage, we do not know the contents of the report or its recommendations,” she told reporters during her first official visit here yesterday.

It is learnt that the warning is being issued to local heritage authorities to better improve safeguards and management of the sites.

A serious breach of heritage guidelines will result in a Red Flag warning, denoting that the status of a particular site is under serious threat or in danger.

Heng said the ministry had taken measures to better manage heritage matters, including those concerning George Town and Malacca City.

Controversy arose over the Rice Miller boutique hotel in Weld Quay and the Boustead Royale Bintang Hotel located in the George Town heritage core zone, and the E & O Hotel extension project as well as a Low Yat Group Hotel planned in the buffer zone.
