Online poll to pick Chinese road signs

GEORGE TOWN: The Chinese community can take part in an online poll to decide whether road signs at the heritage zone here should be written in “simplified” or “traditional” Chinese.

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said surfers can go to from Monday to Oct 25 to make their pick.

He said they can also vote “off-line” via forms which are available at the Penang Heritage Trust (PHT) or Penang Chinese Town Hall.

“Results from both the online and off-line voting will be used to standardise the Chinese road signs,” he said at a press conference at Chew Jetty here yesterday.

Chow said the online poll was decided following discussions between the state government, PHT, Penang Chinese Reporters Association and Penang Press Club.

He said some quarters in the Chinese community felt that although the current simplified Chinese road signs were easier to write, the traditional Chinese signs were more appropriate for the heritage enclave.

He said the English and Chinese bilingual road sign project was being carried out in stages since November last year.

Chow said the project involved the putting up of 300 bilingual road signs at 82 roads at a cost of RM45,000.
