Nazri: Reports On MACC Pay Rise Proposal “Not True”

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 (Bernama) — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz has refuted a news report that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will propose to the government that the salaries of ministers, deputy ministers and elected representatives be increased.

He said that a MACC officer had contacted him this morning over the report which appeared on the front page of an English language daily.

“I don’t know about this; the MACC called me this morning and denied all this, they did not make any statement; and it’s not finalised,” he told reporters at parliament lobby Tuesday.

The report, quoting a senior government source, said that the move was to check abuse of power and graft among elected representatives.

Mohamed Nazri said the suggestion was not tenable in the current economic situation.

Meanwhile, the MACC said in a statement that the matter was still being studied by its Inspection and Consultancy Division.

“The study, upon completion, will be referred to the Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel comprising experts in various fields and representatives of civil society,” it said.

It added that the panel would look further into the matter before submitting recommendations to the government.
