What is next western products in Melaka heritage zone? Playboy Cafe or what?

Except for pure commercial reason, I see no benefit to enrich Melaka cultural heritage with a Hard Rock Cafe in Jonker Street. Of course this is just another UMNO money making business regardless its bad consequences to Melaka world heritage status.

Local and foreign visitors come to Melaka to see big guitar? What is next western products to be introduced to Melaka? Playboy Cafe with bunny girls?

Read the press statement from Badan Warisan against the Hard Rock project, http://www.badanwarisan.org.my/content/?cid=364

Write your protest to local newspapers, Melaka governemt, Unesco, etc.

Your small action can make thing different, don’t talk and no action.

Sub: Hard Rock Cafe is not a right cultural product in the Melaka Heritage Zone

Seems Melaka authorities is not learning any lesson from Starbucks pullout from the Forbidden City in China for its odd image and mismatching with its surroundings.

I see no benefit to enrich Melaka cultural heritage with a Hard Rock Cafe in Jonker Street, a world heritage core zone except to say this is just another money making business regardless its bad consequences to Melaka world heritage status. Local and foreign visitors flocking to Melaka to see big guitar is just another unproven assumption, more data need to be collected before any party comes down to this conclusion.

The best alternative is Hard Rock Cafe should be built outside the heritage zone to minimize its impact on Melaka charms as a historic city.

Was UNESCO World Heritage Center consulted and informed before a green light is given to this alien cultural product? What is next western products to be introduced to Melaka heritage city? Playboy Cafe with sexy bunny girls I guess!

Hard Rock Cafe Malacca eyes RM1m a month

Published: 2011/06/10

Malacca’s new tourism product, Hard Rock Cafe, which will be built on the World Heritage Site in Jonker Walk, is expected to generate sales of RM1 million a month.

Chairman of Hard Rock Cafe Enterprise (M) Sdn Bhd, Tan Sri Syed Yusoff Syed Nassir, said the cafe was expected to attract between 360,000 and 480,000 patrons a year.

“The cafe’s profit is expected to amount to 60 per cent of what the Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur generated,” he said, declining to reveal the figure.

Syed Yusoff said this at a media briefing after the groundbreaking ceremony officiated by Malacca Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, yesterday.

He said the cafe would be able to accommodate 180 patrons.

The cafe would be operational by year-end 2012, he said.

Syed Yusoff said prior to the launch of the cafe, a souvenir shop, named ‘Rock Shop’ would be opened to sell exclusive Hard Rock Cafe products.

He said the company picked Malacca for its third Hard Rock Cafe because of its strategic location in Jonker Walk.

“Another factor is that number of tourists visiting the state has reached 10 million a year,” he said.

Syed Yusoff said the cafe would offer various local and Western food, entertainment, and sales of exclusive Hard Rock products.

“The big guitar, an icon of Hard Rock Cafe worldwide, would also be a big attraction for the local and foreign tourists,” he said.

Earlier, Mohd Ali said the Melaka government planned to instal closed-circuit television cameras at all historical sites in the state to prevent thieves carting away valuable artefacts.

He was commenting on reports of the theft of wheels from ancient Portuguese cannons on top of St John’s Hill at Bandar Hilir on Wednesday. — Bernama
