Kedah is a backwater state under PAS

I’m fully agree with Tourism Minister’s comment on tourism in Kedah is deteriorating under the PAS-led PR government.

The tourist arrivals drastic dropped from 1.9 million in 2009 to 1.1 million in 2010 indicated something amiss in Kedah. Lack of proactive promotion and campaign by Kedah government unlike Sabah government.

I visited Sungai Kedim Forest Reserve in Kulim last May, and found there are spider nets inside the office, I bumped into one of the spider nets. Hardly more than 10 visitors climbed up the longest tree top walk in the world for the the second half of the day.

How many local people heard about this park famous for its whitewater rafting? Ask yourself did you know Sungai Kedim Forest Reserve before you read my posting? The tree top canopy walk was erected in 2005, already six years old, and yet the attraction is still unknown to many Malaysians.

Have you visited Merbok museum and archaeological site? My first visit was in 1984 and made a second visit a few years later.

PAS only weapon to attract conservative rural Malays is hudud law and anti-gay and concert rhetoric.

Tourism Ministry Concerned Over Fewer Tourist Arrivals To Kedah

ALOR SETAR, Oct 29 (Bernama) — The Tourism Ministry is concerned over the declining number of tourist arrivals to Kedah since 2008, Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said.

She said statistics showed that the number of tourist arrivals in the state dropped from 4.5 million in 2007 to 3.8 million in 2008 and 2009 and 2.7 million in 2010.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals decreased from 1.8 million in 2007 to 1.6 million in 2008, increased slightly to 1.9 million in 2009 but dropped to 1.1 million in 2010, she said.

“Malaysia had 23 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2009, which increased to 24.6 million last year. However, they chose to visit other states such as Sabah instead of Kedah.

“There is more to Kedah than just Langkawi Island. The state government can promote other tourism products like the padi museum and the cultural village centre which must be cared for and maintained,” she said after visiting the Kedah State Art Gallery, here.

Dr Ng said she hoped that the state government will continue to review Kedah’s tourism industry because it was a beneficial economic activity for taxi drivers, restaurants, shopping malls and hotels.

In the 2012 Budget tabled recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced an allocation of RM420 million to develop infrastructure in Langkawi as it is one of the most important tourism products in Malaysia, she said.

Dr Ng said her ministry was in the midst of discussions with a Russian airline to have direct flights from that country to Langkawi in the hope of attracting more tourists to the resort island.

She said 2010 statistics showed that 600,000 Russian tourists visited Thailand but only 37,000 came to Malaysia.

“By year-end, I expect a flight from eastern Russia to fly tourists straight to Langkawi and the ministry is more than willing to provide assistance on this,” she added.

Pusat Bandaraya Alor Setar kini berubah wajah.

Under PAS, Kedahans will get a new lifestyle shopping mall AMAN CENTRAL in Alor Star opposite the famous Telekom Tower. This is something BN cannot deliver in the past 30 years on the site of the abandoned Tunku yaakop complex in city centre.

Aman Central will house a supermarket, a major department store, branded fashion retailers, food and beverage outlets, a 36-lane bowling centre and an eight-hall cineplex, among others. A five-star hotel and a five-star condominium named as Amansuri Residences would be built adjacent to the mall. A connecting element for visitors between the mall and the neighbouring development, the Aman Walk that mirrors against the Bintang Walk in Kuala Lumpur would also be developed.

It will also generate the state’s economy by creating businesses, commercial and job opportunities.

For once residents of Alor Star can rejoice as development is not only happening in Langkawi island – a plac where BN folks are siphoning the state’s wealth!

AJ says:

BN developed Langkawi only but not the rest of Kedah as it can plunder easily th wealth from the island under the guise of its tourist attractions.

Eirma says:

If Malaysians continue voting for BN, then Barang Naik harga will be the norm:
– Rice (excuse Thai floods),
– electricity (reduced subsidy of gas but maintain IPP);
– water (cost of privatisation to feed UMNO/BN cronies);
– highway toll (money spent on freebies);
– flour and sugar (reduce subsidy);
– fuel (higher prices in neighbouring country to reduce smuggling);
– fish and other essentials (weak ringgit & higher import cost)
and FINALLY the BIG ONE introduction of GST will trigger inflation.

If you don’t believe continue voting BN and keep this as a reminder for comparison when the actual thing happen.

wah lau eh !
nkkhoo u need to learn to meditate (go sigiriya mountain resort) or yoga practice to calm your nerves.
If hav not been to Kedah, can take Grassland Bus from Muar (stopover S Petani for breakfast).
My buddy told me Kedah cost of living is heaven.
Go try Nasi Lemak Ong or Ali Nasi Lemak. Also Mee Abu. At frst i don’t believe but when i checked internet, these food stalls are truly real real one.
Don’t need to use brain when food is cheap there.
fyi bus ride from JB to Alor Star RM70 – sap sap sui for you.

Dabangg of Muar says:

Jangan curi-curi but betul betul bercuti lah.

enourage more Kedah folks to come to Johor (& vice versa – but not for vices at W Ah Fook Lane, ok?)

sad no firefly or airasia for direct JB-A Star flights, otherwise i can go to visit Pekan Rabu at Alor Star (where Mahathir started to do biz and learnt to control the minds of Msians!)

nkkhoo, hav u been to Kedah ?

nkkhoo says:

How to visit Sungai Kedim and Merbok if I have never visited Kedah? Use ur brain a bit, ok?

Eirma says:

You should tell Curi-Curi Ng that Chinese like you also cuti-cuti Malaysia, but not necessarily stay it those homestay or hotels for her to gather data.

nkkhoo says:

I stayed in hotel although i hv a few good friends in Penang for tumpang.

Jinjang says:

The Kedah state government achieved a 135.8% increase in state revenue with a record surplus budget for 2010 at RM22.50 million, compared to deficit of RM62.89 million in 2009, according to the latest A-G’s report on the state. State expenditure meanwhile only rose by RM2.55 million or 0.6%. This led to a surplus for the state government in 2010.

nkkhoo says:

A good thing does not cancel off a bad thing.

The rakyats expect their government is all rounded and good in every sector.

Sabariah says:

Why don’t you ask Ng Yen2 to press for Alor Star-JB flight?
I am from JB and my daughter is studying in Universiti Utara. There is a strong demand for such flights, including from those Kedah/Perlis people working in Johor and Singapore. Mainland Kedah id deprived of tourists because the Alor Star airport (like Senai) is under-utilized although there is demand for more flights. Ng Yen2 does not know the rakyat issue and only good at wasting public fund and deny it.

Kedah may be a backwater but the people are spiritually stronger than Johoreans. They lead a more contented life and sledom pursue materialistic lifestyle – that’s Darul Aman! Above all, the Sultan of Kedah is great as he (unike others) does not interfere with local politics and does not make ludicrous statement. Good that he is (again) to be our next King. Daulat Tuanku!

nkkhoo says:

The PR exco only wakes up after three years hybernation and starts to prepare his Kedah tourism proposal to Ng Yen Yen.

That is gaji buta for Kedah PR tourism exco.

If backwater is good for rakyat, Kelantan youths do not need to migrate to KL and Johor for jobs.

Alfred says:

Federal government’s tourism initiative only focus on Langkawi island but not the rest of Kedah on the mainland, because the umno cronies led by Tun M have personal stakes in the island.

How to promote tourism in Kedah mainland when BN strangely used its power to cancel the then-to-be-launch Alor Star-Singapore flight by Fireflyz upon losing Kedah to Pakatan? Imagine the loss of Singaporean tourists to Alor Star!

Dabangg of Muar says:

Merbok museum and archaeological site will never be publicised by cuti-cuti Msia because it proves that Malays are Hindus before the arrival of Arab merchants converting them.
