When Unesco defined the drains in the Georgetown as heritage asset with universal value?

Penang NGOs, how about your shits drop into the toilet bowl in the Georgetown? Your dropping must be preserved also because of its heritage value.

Hassle over drain upgrading

THE Penang Government is disappointed that several heritage non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have complained about works to upgrade and widen drains in the heritage areas in George Town.

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said they should not have complained to the Department of National Heritage over the matter without referring first to the council.

He said that the NGOs had complained that the drains should not be upgraded as they were part of Penang’s heritage.

“We are upgrading the drains because they are very old and they cannot hold the heavy volume of water during the rainy season, This has resulted in floods.

“Flooding is a major concern and affects the people. We are upgrading the drains to help address this issue. The NGOs should consider this before making any complaints,” he said.

Flood prevention: Work to upgrade drains being carried out along Lebuh Campbell

He asked if the NGOs preferred the inner city to be flooded and traffic flow to get worse. He added that the floods could damage heritage buildings.

He said that the drains involved were those along Jalan Sungai Ujang, Jalan Kuala Kangsar, Lebuh Cintra, Lebuh Kimberly and Jalan Lim Chwee Leong.

“If the NGOs want to take a very strict view on proper heritage conservation, then technically any refurbishment works on the heritage buildings should also be frozen,” said Chow.

He hoped the NGOs and the council would work together.
