The sacred Tooth of the Buddha Temple in Kandy Sri Lanka

Sri-Lanka-Kandy-Temple-of-the-Tooth-640

I stared at the Tooth of Buddha golden temple from this angle for almost a year because my residence is located opposite the temple. Life is so harmonious and peaceful in a mountainous city surrounded by lush green jungle.

The Kandy lake is a man-made lake, and the biggest man-made lake I saw in Sri Lanka is much bigger than Tasik Chini with no sight on other shore. Such a huge lake is an inland sea for me. The amazing is these man-made lakes were constructed by Sri Lankan ancient people at several hundred years ago with primitive tools.

The grand procession in Kandy begins today.

Kandy Esala Perahera begins on August 11, 2013.

The historic Esala Maha Perahera of Kandy will commence at the auspicious time of the traditional Kap planting ceremony, on 7th August’s morning. The Kandy Esala Pageant begins on August 11 with the first Kumbal Perahera parading the streets of Kandy from 7.31 pm, 11st August 2013 to the 15th of this month. The Randoli Perahera is scheduled to commence on the 16th.

The perahera route will be Dalada Vidiya, D S Senanayake Vidiya, Pansala Para, Deva Vidiya, Colombo Street, Yatinuwara Vidiya and back to the Sri Dalada Maligawa. Nearly 70 to 80 caprisoned elephants will be featured at the perahera apart from various dance troupes.

The most colorful feature of the historic Esala processing, the Randoli Maha Perahera will parade the streets on the 20th. The traditional water cutting ceremony will take place at the Gatemba river in the following morning. The Maha Nuwara Esala Perahera activities will come to an end with the conducting of the day perahera on the same day.

Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa Pradeep Nilanga Dela told the national radio that the fulfilment of the ancient traditional ritual to inform the head of state, the President Mahinda Rajapakse on the successful conclusion of the Esala Maha Perahera, will also take place in the evening on this day.
