Ask Mahathir how Indonesians get myKad

20 guards with fake MyKads

Putra Jaya: No less than 20 security guards were detained and charged with possession of fake MyKads between 2011 and 2013, according to National Registration Department (NRD) Director General Datuk Jariah Mohd Said.

“In future operations, the NRD will also inspect headquarters of security service companies to ensure that their workers have valid MyKad, and that they will only employ foreigners with the qualification,” said Jariah.

She said since 2010, NRD had carried out 804 operations involving fake MyKad and the culprits were sentenced to between two months and two years’ jail and fined between RM3,000 and RM10,000.

She also disclosed that two Filipinos were sentenced by the Sepang Magistrate’s Court Tuesday to six months’ jail for possession of fake Malaysian identity cards (MyKad).

The two were detained in an operation, Ops ID which was carried out, Tuesday. She did not elaborate on the case, saying the department would conduct further investigations on how the duo obtained the documents.

“The Ops ID was carried out simultaneously at premises and residences in Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan by 50 NRD officers during which 800 security guards were questioned,” Jariah told a media conference at the NRD headquarters.

Earlier, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi directed the NRD to conduct an inspection on all security guards in the country to verify their identification status.

The measure was taken following the incident in which a security guard who had obtained employment using a fake identity card shot dead bank officer Norazita Abu Talib, 37, while committing robbery at the Ambank Subang Jaya branch.

Bank officer Norazita Abu Talib, 37, was shot in the head at close range by a security guard at 6.20pm on Oct 23 at USJ Sentral, Subang Jaya.

The security guard then fled with RM450,000 from the bank’s vault.

Police had detained three people including a woman, believed to be the security guard’s wife, on the day of the incident and recovered RM20,000.

Jariah said the NRD would continue to conduct Ops ID nationwide, jointly with the Immigration department. “During the Ops ID, some of the foreigners working as security guards were found to use their Social Visit Pass to gain employment. This is an offence under the Immigration Act.

“NRD could not detain the men as it has no authority, which lies with the Immigration department.

“But their particulars have been recorded,” she said.

She said the operation also revealed that many of the security guards were Malaysians with valid MyKad but were only working as replacement personnel, meaning they were not based in a specific location but as security guards for a short period of time.

Meanwhile, five more men – all with fake MyKads – have been arrested in connection with the killing of the bank officer.

The men, all foreigners aged between 30 and 50, were detained on Sunday following raids in Subang Jaya.

Selangor Deputy Police Chief DCP Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar said the latest arrests brought the total number of those detained over the case to 10 people, adding that it was alarming as most of them had fake MyKads.

Those arrested are the suspect’s family members and friends.

We believe they are Indonesians. We will investigate how they obtained the fake MyKads,” he said.
