Another old story, the same plea to boost up agro production was made in 1998

I say, tomato over supply issue from Cameron Highlands shall not occured if there are enough tomato sauce factories and cool storage rooms. The farmers have to dump tomatos because of no buyers.

The import of food is increased from RM20 billion to RM50 billion per year after 15 long years of talking cock for increasing supply of local agro products.

Three agencies to boost supply of agro products

PUTRAJAYA: To address the issue of unstable prices caused by production and supply, the Government is looking at strengthening the role of three agencies to increase supply and distribution of agrofood commodities.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said they were Fama, National Fishermen’s Association (Nekmat) and the National Farmers Organisation (Nafas).

He said this after chairing a special committee meeting on the people’s cost of living at the Perdana Putra Building here yesterday.

Muhyiddin said the Government, through Fama and Nekmat, had spent RM14.2mil to stockpile selected commodities to ensure a constant supply of agrofood that could be sold at reasonable prices.

As of April 15, the two agencies had stocked up tomatoes, cabbages, coconuts, potatoes, big onions, red onions, small onions, red carrots, fish and chicken to ensure a constant supply of fresh and quality products.

Muhyiddin said Fama was also working on introducing more wholesale farmers’ markets to create additional platforms for the sale of cheaper agrofood products.

Muhyiddin also said that checks at 9,500 business premises throughout the country from January to March showed there was no drastic increase in the prices of essential goods.
