English daily The Sun today apologised to Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over a report which said the minister had called non-Malays “arrogant”.

The apology, which was published on page 2 in today’s edition, came under the heading, “Quote Wrongly Attributed to Ahmad Zahid”.

The daily said that it had wrongly attributed the quote that the non-Malays were arrogant to the home minister, when it was in fact made by another Umno leader at the opening of the Segambut Umno division meeting on September 1.

“We regret the inadvertent error and wish to apologise to the minister for any embarrassment arising from our report,” The Sun reported, adding that the report has been removed from the website.

The report, which was published on September 2, was attributed to Zahid who had allegedly slammed non-Muslims for becoming increasingly arrogant, saying that the Malays are now paying the price for being kind to them.

Zahid later said that his comments had been taken out of context as he had aimed his remarks at DAP leaders and supporters.

On Saturday, he slammed the daily again and said that he wanted to meet the reporter whom he claimed had misreported his “arrogant” comment.

He also said that if the article was not retracted, he would “know what to do”.

“It is not true that I accused non-Malays of being arrogant. I have never said that but the reporter from The Sun (wrote it that way).

“Understand Malay first before translating it into English or other languages,” he had said. – September 8, 2014.

Malaysia Insider
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) has slammed non-Muslims for becoming increasingly arrogant, saying that the Malays are now paying the price for being kind to them, The Sun reported today.

In the report, the Home Minister said as a result, the non-Malays are insulting the bumiputera, royalty and Islam.

“We allowed them to be indebted to us without needing them to pay it back; they are now insulting Islam and the Malays under the pretense of democracy, freedom of speech, and globalisation,” he was quoted as saying by the paper while opening the Segambut Umno division meeting yesterday.

Zahid attributed this development to the perception that foreign cultural norms were better than what was practised in Malaysia.

The report said he called on non-Malays to respect the Bumiputera and urged Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail to expedite sedition cases involving high-profile figures in order to protect the government’s credibility and address allegations of selective prosecution.

Earlier, the report said, Umno Segambut division chief Kamaruddin Ambok had complained that Malays were being selectively prosecuted but those who had insulted Islam, royalty and the Malays were being let off.

He cited the example of the road rage incident where Siti Fairrah Ashykin Kamaruddin, who is better known as Kiki, had been sentenced within eight days of the incident but noted that Seputeh MP Teresa Kok was still free.

According to The Sun, Kamaruddin had been referring to Kok’s Chinese New Year satirical video “Onederful Malaysia” which had caused an outrage among Muslims groups who had even threatened to slap her. Kok was charged with sedition over the video.

In the report, he also claimed that there were many other cases where provocative comments had been posted on social media by non-Muslims, which showed that non-Bumiputera people were getting more and more “biadap” and “kurang ajar” (rude).

He said this was because the Malays were divided and weak, adding that there were now Malays joining the DAP, which is predominantly Chinese. – September 2, 2014.
