I recall how I missed the plane crashed in Medan in 1998

She is lucky for not flying together with her fiance?

I was almost boarding the crashed plane in Medan which was took off at 30 minutes earlier than my flight to Batam. I changed my original plan from Jakarta to Medan, then go to Penang because of no direct flight to Penang.

I had decided to visit my friends in Batam and my mum in Johor first before returning to Penang in the ticket counter at the airport.

The passengers in the Medan flight were using the same waiting room with Batam flight. I still remembered the looks of a Medan Chinese tycoon and an Indonesia girl who perished in the crash.

SINGAPORE: It was supposed to be Indonesia Air Asia passenger Alain Oktavianus Siaun’s last vacation together with his family as a bachelor but it ended in a tragedy when the Singapore-bound flight lost contact while in the air.

His fiancee Louise Sidharta, 25, said she was on her way to the airport in Surabaya to catch a separate 1.25pm flight to meet her fiancé and his family of five in the island republic when she learnt about the incident.

“I heard it on the radio and immediately browsed the Internet and saw the news.

“My heart knew by then that my fiance was on that flight,” she said when met by the hoard of press members waiting outside the special holding room set up at the Terminal 2 of the Singapore Changi Intenational Airport here at around 6.30pm on Sunday.

She then confirmed with her fiance’s relatives in Indonesia to make sure that Siaun, his parents and three brothers were on that flight.

Sidharta said she was supposed to join them for a holiday before their wedding, which was planned for May next year.

Maintaining a strong front, Sidharta who was accompanied by her sister and other relatives, advised the family members of other passengers on the flight to stay strong and keep away from negative thoughts.

“We have to stay positive and hope that they (loved ones) could be found soon,” she said, speaking in a mix of English and Bahasa Indonesia.

She added that she would remain at the airport’s holding room for the flight passengers’ family and next-of-kin to ‘wait aimlessly’.

Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501, that took off from Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport, went off flight control radar 42 minutes into its journey.

The flight was carrying seven crew and 155 passengers, and lost contact with air traffic control at 7.24am Indonesian time.

The passengers include 138 adults, 16 children and one infant.
