Let make rakyat demonstrations a tourist attraction

Tourism not affected by illegal street rallies

ILLEGAL street demonstrations have never discouraged tourism in Malaysia in the past and are not likely to, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said yesterday.

“From 2004 to 2012, there has always been an increase in the number of tourists to Malaysia. The only year that saw a drop was in 2003 due to the SARS outbreak and the global recession,” he said.

He said this after the announcement of Citrawarna 1Malaysia 2013 — the Tourism and Culture Ministry’s signature event — at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday.

The event, the 15th since its inception in 1999, will feature 6,700 participants in the the 1.5km parade and is part of the Transformation Tourism Plan aimed to generate RM168 million by 2020.

Next year has been designated “Visit Malaysia Year (VMY)”, during which 28 million tourists are expected to be drawn to the country. “To achieve this, we will also require participation from Selangor, Penang and Kelantan.

Politics should be put aside in regards to tourism,” Nazri said. The launch of Citrawarna 1Malaysia will be graced by the king and queen and themed “Visit Malaysia Year 2014 — Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia”.

The parade will consist of floats and multicultural dances in 15 segments highlighting Malaysia’s tourism products and its diverse communities, such as eco-tourism, sports tourism, contemporary art tourism, heritage, parks and gardens, tarian-tarian rakyat 1Malaysia, and other performances.

Nazri said members of the media from 24 countries, including Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, Turkey, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Egypt and Iran, will be present, while about 260 foreign delegates are expected to attend.

“RTM2 will broadcast it live from 8.30pm until 10.30pm while Truly Asia TV will feature a delayed broadcast,” he said.

“The highlight of the parade is the Mega Endang performance which will be presented by the performers taking part, and the finale will be a VMY-themed performance and the Joget Lambak. About 200 Porsche cars will also be on show.”

The event will start at 5pm with a pre-show. Local artistes such as Ella, Jimmy Palikat and Datuk Khadijah Ibrahim will also be performing until midnight.

For those interested to register for the ministry’s 1Voluntourism, a booth will be set up from 2pm to 8pm at Dataran Merdeka. There will also be a 1Malaysia food court for food lovers.

For those wishing to use public transportation, services for LRT and RapidKL stations near the venue will be extended until 12.30am and 1am, respectively.

The roads around Merdeka Square will closed from 8.30pm to midnight today for rehearsals.

A lie from Ng Yen Yen?

Friendly Penang motorists politely give way to cyclists, allowing visitors to explore a total of 20 points of interest such as the Clan Jetties of Penang, the traditional Chinese fishing settlements, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in just over 8 hours.

Frankly, I do not know Penangite motorists are so polite and civil-minded to give way to cyclists. Maybe she was given such special treatment during her cycling tour in the Georgetown under a VVIP escort service by the traffic police.

I tried to cycle around Peninsular Malaysia after my graduation with a bully. Unfortunately the buddy is a person who is always doing work in half-way. At the end, I had to escort him back to KL and cut short the whole trip after only finishing KL to Pekan route.

I did time my normal cycling speed after a few days on the road, it was about 30 Km per hour. The plan was peddling 100 to 120 Km in each day and took 30-day to complete the journey.

Round the peninsula with bicycle is one of my regrettable and incomplete missions.

Had learned a bitter lesson from the incident, do not find a travel partner who is weak in mental strength and cannot hold on till the finishing line. It’s better to travel alone if you cannot find a right travel partner.

Before you want to marry with someone, go DIY traveling with your future life partner for one or two weeks. If both of you have no quarrel and friction during the whole journey, go ahead to register. If not, it’s better to rethink and reassess your partner is truly a right soulmate for you.

Now you can tour around Malaysia on a bicycle

15th November 2012

Tourism Malaysia has developed 87 cycling packages throughout the country, affording visitors the opportunity to explore the country at their leisure and a “live like locals” experience. Touring by bicycle allows visitors to explore the beauties, sights and sounds of the Malaysian countryside taking as many stops as they like along the route. As a result, they can discover points of interest, taste local delicacies and meet local people in a way that would not be possible with a traditional bus tour. Discover Malaysia by bicycle from just £45 per person, see below for more details.

There are several pre-organised tours that follow a set itinerary and offer visitors a guided exploration of some of Malaysia’s most well-known and historic sites. The ‘Tour of Delights’ offers visitors the chance to explore Penang in North-West Malaysia, one of the most developed, ethnically diverse and thriving tourist areas. Over two days and one night the tour covers a total distance of 6.07km over a predominantly flat course that is relatively easy for most visitors.

The two-day, one-night ‘Tour of Heritage’ allows visitors to explore Ipoh, the capital city of Perak State, by both van and bicycle. The first leg is a half-day Ipoh city Tour by van, with the second leg covering 8.41km by bicycle, taking just over two hours and covering ten sites.

Malaysia Airlines fly daily from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur International Airport with Visa’s purchased on arrival for British passport holders. Year round events include the Royal Langkawi International Regatta in January, the Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix in March, the Malaysia International Shoe Festival in April, Colours of Malaysia Cultural Festival in May, Malaysia’s Summer Contemporary Arts Tourism Festival, Malaysia Annual International Gourmet Festival in October and the Summer and End of Year Mega Sales Carnivals with many other notable events throughout the year. Malaysia has a tropical climate and is a very welcoming multi-cultural society home to some of the best spa resorts in the world. Malaysian cuisine is as diverse as the nation itself, fusing the culinary traditions and flavours of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Arabian and European cooking.

1Malaysia International Tourism Night Floral Parade 2012

I will not watch it for second time for the parade boat float. The flotilla design seems is from a same Ng-linked crony company, which is totally lacking creativity and monotonous.

Putrajaya Floria 2012′s Photos

Most visitors are locals and I don’t believe the total visitors can hit one million for the 9-day event. No more than 30,000 crowd during the last day’s event.

No comment on its world-class status as proudly claimed by Tourism Minister, Ng Yen Yen Because I have never visited Flower exhibition in Netherland.

Muar tourism promotion on track, but the initiative not from the local government

There are several parties from private sectors, schools, universities and individuals are doing their duty to promote Muar as a new destiny for tourism.

MCA Bentayan Committee – Published Muar City Map and Muar Discovery brochure. Also organized cultural and sport events.

Muar Photography Society – Published Muar pictorial travel guide.

Malaysia Tourism Ministry – Organized Muar food trail festival .

MU and NUS – Conducted architectural study on Muar old buildings and published a book on the research works.

Chung Hwa High School – Published Muar eco-tourism map and organized Muar old building models exhibition.

Gourmet writer, Lim Kim Cherng published a Chinese book on Muar hawker food.

nkkhoo.com – Designed and hosted a bilingual tourism portal for Muar at muar.net.

Unfortunately, DAP Muar, Muar Municipal Council and Johor State Tourism Board all are providing lip service.

Johor Sultan was quite upset with Johor state executive for not promoting tourism in Johor effectively.
