When you’re running a semi-authoritarian government – the kind that holds elections but doesn’t really intend to let the population choose anyone but them – nothing is scarier than the words “independent election monitors.”
Malaysians are the latest to debate just who should be allowed to scrutinize their electoral process. An organization known as Bersih (Malay for “Clean”) finds itself in the government’s crosshairs as the country prepares for a hotly contested vote later this year, facing accusations that they are foreign agents bent on bringing down the country’s long-ruling United Malays National Organization.
Since holding a mass rally that saw tens of thousands take to the streets of Kuala Lumpur last year to call for fair elections, Bersih has come under constant attack in Malaysia’s state-controlled media. The group’s leaders have been accused of working for foreigners and of having an “anti-Islamic” agenda, a heavy charge in this majority Muslim state.
“You know what calling me anti-Islamic means. It’s basically an instruction for someone to kill me,” Bersih chairwoman Ambiga Sreenevasan told me in an interview. A well-known lawyer and former head of the Malaysian Bar Council, she said she’s also seen online calls – from a pro-government blogger – for her to be raped as punishment for her political activities.

Liow Tiong Liar said it was divine winds blow the teargas into compound, now Internal Security and Public Order director, Salleh Mat Rashid said canisters trailed the protesters into compound.
What a stupid and twisted logic from the police, maybe only orang kampung will buy in this logic.
The protesters were seeking refuge in the hospital compound, firing teargas to protesters in the compound means firing into the same compound.
The end result is still teargas canisters were fired into hospital compound, at least one canister dropped on the grass field next to the main building.

The police admit that their water cannon was fired into the compund but denied that they had shot tear gas cannisters into the area.
KUALA LUMPUR: The police admitted firing their water cannon into the Tung Shin hospital compound during the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9.
Internal Security and Public Order director Salleh Mat Rashid said that some tear gas might have trailed into the compound as well.
However, he maintained that no tear gas canisters were shot directly into the compound, where a group of protesters had sought refuge.
“We did fire water into the hospital, we admit,” Salleh said while showing a video of a water cannon firing into the hospital compound.
The video was one of many shown during a presentation at Bukit Aman to reveal the police’s side of the incident.
As the water cannon was seen firing into the compound, Salleh, in referrence to one of the hospital’s buildings, said: “This is empty.”
Salleh also showed a Malaysiakini video that showed the police firing near the hospital.
Using this video as evidence, he said that the tear gas canisters were not aimed at the hospital, but towards protesters.
There are more than 37,000 views before it was removed. BN and police should be delighted with the missing of this video clip because no evidence available any more.

Probe Into Alleged Tear Gas Incident At Tung Shin Hospital To Start Soon
IPOH, July 21 (Bernama) — The investigation into allegations that police had fired tear gas into the Tung Shin Hospital compound, by 11 of its doctors will start soon, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
“I have instructed the ministry’s secretary-general on the matter and we will speed it up. The terms of reference have been outlined and the investigation will start in a week or two,” he said after attending the opening of the Buntong Health Clinic by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, here Thursday.
He was asked to comment on several online reports that 11 doctors from the hospital in Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, claimed police had fired tear gas into the hospital’s compound to disperse demonstrators during the July 9 illegal rally.
Tung Shin’s board of directors had, however, refuted the claim on July 11.
Liow said: “We will ensure there is no overlap in the investigations. We will look at it from the hospital’s perspective of patient safety and security while the police, from the overall public safety aspect,” he said.
He added that the cabinet was concerned about the matter.
On the shortage of doctors, Liow said the ministry was training 4,000 doctors annually and they would be ready to serve in two years’ time, thus reducing the burden on the existing medical officers.
