How many pirated softwares installed in your home PC?

My home PC still got six pirated softwares, some of them are video editing softwares. Still actively looking for open source or freeware to replace them.

1. Video capture software with sound recording from the source feature unlike the open source, CamStudio. Sound recording from speaker in my CamStudio is still not working. I believe this issue is related to sound card configuration.

2. Video splitter and joiner. Freeware SolveighMM AVI Trimmer may be able to replace these two since most of my video files are in AVI and WMV format. Still evaluating SolveighMM AVI Trimmer for its stability.

3. Video watermarking. Still looking for freeware alternative.

Acrobat Reader is a bloated software, 65MB for Windows XP Adobe Reader X. I shunned Foxit Reader after ASK toolbar is a part of the software and switched to PDF-XChange Viewer six months ago.

PDF-XChange Viewer presents users with an alternative to Adobe’s Acrobat Reader. With some interesting additions, it’s not hard to see this reader gaining some fans over its more popular competition.

The program’s interface looks and feels remarkably like Acrobat Reader, but with more command icons along the top. Users who are familiar with viewing PDFs will find this fairly intuitive, but newcomers are advised to experiment with the options and pay attention to the Help file. Viewing PDFs is incredibly simple and should not be a problem for users. The documents look good through the reader and are easily navigated. While the program is good for simply looking at PDFs, it excels with its added features. The control panel along the top displays a long list of options for editing your PDFs. The most useful we found was the option for making bright red shapes and lines, which can be utilized to mark errors and make comments (an element that has always been one of Acrobat’s best tools). Here, XChange Viewer gives users more options than its competition, allowing for more in-depth markups.

This free program imitates its competition in all the right places and gives users some extra features where it counts, combining into an excellent download option for anyone looking for an alternative to Acrobat Reader.

This freeware from Western Digital saved me a lot time after my Windows XP corrupted (again!!) yesterday. Instead of spending a few laborious days to reinstall more than 30 utilities software and a fresh copy Windows XP, the recovery of my PC Windows system was completed in a half-day after a proper format NTFS was selected for my C drive. The backup recovery usually is taking less an hour if no glitch in the harddisk format.

Your must have at least a WD harddisk to use this WD edition software, otherwise it will simply not working. Seagate provides similar freeware, DiskWizard in their website.

The free version, GoToCamera.com is a good surveillance client for you to turn your PC webcam into a home surveillance tool.

The setup is easy, go to www.gotocamera.com to register for a free account and then download a client software. Install the client is like installing any other software in your PC and fine tune the setting a bit. Your home surveillance camera should be up and running in less than 15 minutes.

I turn on my office camera surveillance client whenever I’m leaving KL office for a few days like the Hari Raya break. The surveillance software will alert you in real-time by sending you email with a photo and 20 second video clip (for free version) or SMS (for paid version) if there is any motion detected.

I stick to free service because my push-in email will alert me in real-time basis as SMS in case there is intrusion into my office.

For Windows XP, it’s advise to install older version, 6.1.2 because new version is clashed with Windows XP.

Recently my Windows XP was corrupted and inaccessible, lady luck also not in my side, the only softcopy backup also partly corrupted during the image retrieval. I lost all photos in the Bersih rally and several other memorable events.
