Dear Old Man, you're wrong again in saying Malaysia is only country with vernacular schools

There is another country allows vernacular schools, Sri Lanka allows Tamil language used as the main medium in the government fully funded Tamil primary schools. They are fully funded unlike Malaysia with semi-funded Chinese and Tamil primary schools.

I was there for a year, I saw their schools with my eyes.

Dr M stands by foreign language remark

Mahathir had said that Malaysia is the only country with government schools that use a foreign language.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohammad today clarified a statement that he made on foreign language as a medium of teaching in government schools.

In a recent interview with Nanyang Siang Pau, he said that Malaysia is the only country in the world with government schools that use a foreign language to teach a community whose ancestors originated from a foreign country.

A reader shot down his claim and pointed out that the Chinese language is taught and spoken in many countries. However, Mahathir begged to differ.

“There is a difference between teaching in a foreign language and learning a foreign language,” he emphasised. “I’m referring to the former. Learning a foreign language is not only permissible but encouraged.”

Mahathir also disputed a claim that Thailand has many schools which use Chinese as a medium of teaching.

“There are international schools which don’t use the Thai national language but they are not funded by they government,” he stated.

“Similar international schools that cater to expatriates are found in many countries, including Malaysia.

“Some nationals also attend these schools. But they are not like the Chinese and Tamil schools in Malaysia which are funded by the government,” he said.

Mahathir then roped in Singapore’s policy to use English as a teaching medium to further drive home his point.

“This hasn’t resulted in it being accused of being anti-Chinese, anti-Tamil or anti-Malay,” he said.

“The national language of predominantly Chinese Singaporeans is Malay but Chinese, Tamil and English are also official languages which are taught and may be used.

“If anyone wishes to refute what I state here, they are welcome. But they must provide evidence to show that I am wrong,” he said.

Mahathir has come full circle – from an ultra back again to an ultra repudiating Bangsa Malaysia and Vision 2020

Two events held almost simultaneously today highlighted the two facets in the battle for the hearts and minds of Malaysians – the launching of neo-NEP Perkasa by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at PWTC and the launching of Datuk Zaid Ibrahim’s book “I, too, am a Malay” (Chinese edition) by Dr. Chen Man Hin in Subang Jaya.

Almost at the same time that the former Prime Minister was awarded the Bintang Perkasa Pribumi Negara after launching Perkasa, Dr. Chen formally launched Zaid book.

What a sharp contrast in the imageries evoked in the two events – the launching of Zaid’s book invoking an inclusive and all-embracing hopes of all Malaysians for a progressive, prosperous common future regardless of race, religion or region with the launching of Perkasa anchored in a hankering for the past, oblivious of 52-years of nation- building, even dismissive of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia concept, all to allow Umno-putras to perpetuate the abuses of NEP by exploiting the name of bumiputras.

As the press have contacted me for my reactions to the Perkasa launch and its inflammatory speeches, this is my preliminary response until I have full access to the speeches concerned.

Mahathir a hypocrite on using English in the schools

mahathir_mohammadHe was the one responsible to convert English medium to Malay school in 70s. Now he is crying foul to blame present government for the policy he had implemented.

Wiping out English campaign from our schools is to make sure students from the poor and rural areas are always stupid as their forefathers, and work for English speaking elites in the cities as cheap labors.

Master English to ensure we are not re-colonised, says Mahathir

SHAH ALAM (Dec 14, 2009): Malaysians have an extremely important role of mastering English to acquire knowledge at a faster pace to ensure there is no ‘re-colonisation’ of the country, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Without a good command of English, the former prime minister noted, the people would not acquire knowledge quickly.

He said this would, in turn, open doors to those knowledgeable to dominate and influence them, either directly or indirectly.

“English is the language of the Knowledge Age. Countries which do not master English will not only be left behind but risk being colonised, either directly or indirectly.

Mahathir is just an image of racist UMNO

UMNO is a racist party whether is under Mahathir or Najib or Abduallah.

Najib has to conceal his true color under the current political reality, the support of Malay racists alone cannot guarantee UMNO’s winning in the election.

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 7, 2009) : Minister in the Prime Minister’s department Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz lashed out at former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, calling him a “racist” for saying there was no need to revamp the Biro Tata Negara (BTN) or National Civics Bureau training modules.

Speaking to reporters in Parliament lobby today, Nazri said while he agreed with the former premier that BTN is for instilling the patriotic spirit, Nazri said the patriotism should not only be for the Malays.

Dr. Mahathir also support that a state government only can be removed in the state assembly

On whether the Perak state assembly should have been dissolved, Dr Mahathir said the assembly should have met and decided on a vote of no confidence against Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as that is the only way to bring down a government.
