Indonesia ex-MPs held over central banker vote graft

Indonesia’s anti-graft commission said it detained 18 former members of the House of Representatives and a sitting lawmaker Friday over alleged bribery related to the appointment of a central banker.

Several members of the House of Representatives from the 1999 to 2004 term allegedly received bribes to vote for Miranda Goeltom to become deputy governor of Bank Indonesia.

“Based on further investigation, we found that they were suspected of receiving bribes in the form of travellers cheques in relation to their votes to appoint the Bank Indonesia senior deputy,” Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesman Johan Budi said in a statement.

“For investigation purpose, KPK will detain them for 20 days starting from January 28, 2011,” he said.
